As the basketball season heads into the final stretch, it was time for the local teams to compete in the MAC Tournament, and there were outstanding performances and a few surprises to report.
The biggest surprise of the tournament was the undefeated Lady Warriors getting handed their first loss of the year in the finals match-up against South Platte, 56-to-47, as detailed in a separate article. For the other local teams, it was consolation rounds with varying degrees of success.
For Potter-Dix, the boys started the tournament with a match-up against Leyton in Dalton, and after a hard-fought game, the Coyotes fell to the Warriors 45-to-36. They then went on to face Banner County at 10 am on Saturday in Bridgeport, and the Coyotes were able to breeze past the Wildcats 64-to-19, limiting the Banner County boys to single-digit scores in each quarter.
The Lady Coyotes of Potter-Dix had their first-round match-up with Garden County on January 20 and fell by a 38-to-24 final score. They then went on to face Minatare in a 9 am matchup in Bridgeport on January 25 and defeated the Lady Indians 41-to-25.
The Creek Valley Lady Storm had a tough match-up with South Platte, and the number two seed cruised to a 66-to-19 victory. The Lady Storm then played Banner County at 9 am Saturday in Bridgeport and fell to Banner County by a final score of 37-to-28.
The Creek Valley Storm came into the tournament as the number 3 seed and hosted number 6 seed Bayard on January 21. Junior Lane Brenneman was dominant for Creek Valley and put up 29 points in the 53-to-46 victory. Creek Valley moved on to face South Platte on January 23, but the Blue Knights outlasted the Storm, overcoming a gutty performance by the Creek Valley boys that took two overtimes to settle by a final of 55-to-44. Creek Valley moved on to the consolation game on Saturday in Bridgeport, but the Leyton Warriors were too strong for the Storm as they fell by a final score of 54-to-45.
The Leyton Warriors had success in the tournament, despite the Lady Warriors Finals loss. The boy's team started against Potter-Dix on January 21 and defeated the Coyotes 45-to-36. Leyton then matched up with Garden County on January 23, but could not get past a tough Eagles squad, falling by a score of 53-to-45. This set up the consolation match-up against Creek Valley on Saturday in Bridgeport, and Leyton was able to get by the Storm 54-to-45 and earn a third-place tournament showing. The Lady Warriors had no trouble in their first-round match-up with Minatare, winning 69-to-11, and then followed up with a big win over Garden County on January 23, 64-to-33. However, the Lady Warriors stumbled in the finals on Saturday against South Platte, falling by a score of 56-to-47 and settling for runner-up honors.
