Red Raiders Back on Track with Win Over North Platte; Lady Raiders Continue Win Streak

After jumping out to 8-and-0 start, Sidney dropped four out of the past five games to drop to 9-and-4 on the season until they were able to snap a three-game skid with a big win over North Platte on January 18. The boys had lost to Sterling, McCook, and Ogallala before they were able to get back on the winning track against North Platte. The Lady Raiders made it six in a row by defeating North Platte, and have not lost since the overtime defeat by Cheyenne East in December.

On Friday, January 17, the Lady Raiders hosted Ogallala, and the Sidney squad trailed midway through the second period before going on an 8-to-0 run capped by a three-point hit by Jordynn Schnell to give Sidney a brief two point lead. Ogallala tied the game at 22-to-22 as the girls went in for the halftime break. Sidney then went on a 19-to-8 run in the third period to open a 43-to-33 lead at the end of the third period. Ogallala fought back to within two points in the final period, but the Lady Raiders held steady and were able to outlast the Lady Indians for a 53-to-48 win. Ryan Dillehay led the scoring for Sidney with 11 points in the victory.

The boys had to match up against the number 1 ranked team in C-1, and the Indians opened the game with a 14-to-4 run. Sidney trailed at the half, and then were down by as many as 17 in the third quarter, before they fought back and closed to within six points in the fourth period. Sidney was not able to close the gap completely, and Ogallala pulled away for the 68-to-56 win. Landon Riddle and Keian Kaiser each had 14 points in the loss.

Both teams were able to come away with wins the next day as they traveled to North Platte for Saturday basketball action. The Lady Raiders had a poor-shooting first half, only scoring 11 points and going 0-for-14 beyond the three-point arc. North Platte did not fare much better, however, and only led 15-to-11 at the halftime intermission. The Lady Raiders rebounded in the third quarter, putting up 23 points while holding North Platte to just four points in the third quarter to build a big 34-to-19 lead going into the final frame. Sidney cruised through the fourth quarter to take the 41-to-27 victory. Kierra Schrader led the scoring for Sidney with 15 points.

The Sidney boys did enough to get the win against North Platte, a team that secured their first victory the previous night. Sidney never did pull very far away from the Bulldogs, and had 18 turnovers on the night. Although the Raiders went into the final stanza with a 10 point lead, the Bulldogs pulled to within three points until the Raiders were sharp at the free throw line to close out the game with a 55-to-48 win. The win stopped the Red Raiders' three-game losing streak, and moved them to 10-and-4 on the year. Alek Doty led the scoring for Sidney with 17 points.
