Lady Warriors Keep Rolling Through Competition

DALTON--Leyton’s Lady Warrior Basketball team had a strong opening to the season, with competitors offering little resistance to the Lady Warrior machine that plays fast, scores in every way possible, and plays shut-down defense.

Head Coach Jed Benish was a little concerned going into the January 9 match-up against Paxton, as the Lady Warriors had a significant layoff over the holidays, and lack of players make it difficult for the girls to scrimmage against each other. Although the Lady Tigers of Paxton are a solid team with good athletes and some height, the Leyton girls had little trouble pulling away from and putting away the Paxton girls in a packed Leyton gym. A 38-to-22 lead at the half left Benish a little concerned, but his girls came out after the halftime break and put up 37 more points on their was to a 30-point win, 75-to-45. Senior Zaili Benish was sharp in this contest, hitting nine three-point shots on her way to a 13-for-17 shooting performance from the field. Jed Benish did show some concern about the rhythm and timing of the offense, noting too many missed passes and turnovers. It is to be expected after a few-week layoff, and in the end the Lady Warriors won by 30 points.

On Saturday the girls traveled to Hay Springs and battled to an 8-to-8 tie at the end of the first period. The second period saw the offense kick into gear, and Leyton took a 25-to17 lead into the halftime break. Leyton continued to score in the second half while the Lady Warrior’s defense put the clamps down on Hay Springs, and Leyton came away with a 50-to-29 win. The girls are next scheduled to travel to Bayard on Thursday, January 16.
