SIDNEY--On December 23, 2024, 22-year-old Dakota Schrencengost, of Sterling, Co., appeared in Cheyenne County Curt via Zoom from the Cheyenne County Jail. Hon. Judge Randin R. Roland presided over a status hearing concerning Schrencengost's Status of Extradition as a Fugitive from Justice.
In a prior hearing on November 13, 2024, Schrencengost extradition was waived and the defendant was advised of his extradition rights. Roland continued the case to February 24, 2025, where Schrencengost will appear in Cheyenne County Court.
Schrencengost has been housed at the Cheyenne County Jail since October 3, 2024, after he was arrested following a high-speed chase. After attempting a traffic stop at the intersection of Old Post Road and Silverberg Drive, the driver of the vehicle, John Marshall Harmon, age 32 of Sterling, Co., accelerated away as Nebraska State Patrol Trooper C. Gibbons exited his patrol car to approach the vehicle, a silver Buick Lucerne. Trooper Gibbons then returned to his patrol car and initiated a pursuit of the Buick. The Buick traveled at high rates of speed within Sidney City Limits, then entered I-80 at the mile-marker 59 East Bound ramp. Trooper Gibbons continued the pursuit at speeds reaching 130 mph, observing the Buick nearly collide with a semi-tractor trailer. Around mile marker 67, the Buick entered the median, turned around, and headed westbound on I-80. Multiple tactical vehicle intervention attempts were made to stop the vehicle. One was successful around mile marker 3 on Link 17J, and the Buick entered a ditch and came to a stop. Driver Harmon and passengers Schrencengost and Kyrie Riggle, age 38, of Sterling, were placed into custody.
During a vehicle fire resulting from the crash, several rounds of ammunition were heard igniting. After the vehicle was deemed safe to approach, a loaded Smith & Wesson 38 Special revolver was found, located inside the Buick behind the driver seat. A search of Schrencengost revealed an empty waistband holder for a handgun.
All three individuals were arrested, with Schrencengost, who had a warrant for his arrest, being charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. Harmon was charged with Felony Flight to Avoid Arrest and Possession of a Weapon During Commission of a Felony. Riggle was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine).
Harmon is lodged in the Cheyenne County Jail, with an additional charge added, Distribution of a Controlled Substance, and Riggle is being held in Scottsbluff County Jail. Both are awaiting trial.
