Leyton's Lady Warrior Basketball team is already firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 4-and-0 record, and only having one challenging contest agains the South Platte Lady Blue Knights on Friday, December 13, 2024.
After opening against Kimball and breezing past the Lady Longhorns 67-to-12, the Lady Warriors next cruised through the Morrill Lady Lions 58-to-25. The Peetz Lady Bulldogs offered no resistance to the Lady Warriors on December 12, falling 66-to-6, followed by the Lady Warriors matching up with the 2-and-1 Lady Blue Knights and came away with a 48-to-36 victory.
The senior-heavy roster is filled with athletic scorers and the Leyton squad plays tough defense. Although not a very long team, they do a great job under the boards positioning themselves for rebounds, and take great follow-up shots to convert on their possessions. Senior Zaili Benish is lights out from beyond the arc, and teams have to pick their poison when defending the Lady Warriors, as the roster is filled with experienced scorers who play an unselfish brand of basketball, always looking for the best possible shot and able to move the ball with authority. Coach Benish has his girls playing sharp and fast, and there will be few teams in D2 that can challenge the Lady Warriors.
The opening of the season has not been as successful for the Warrior boys' team, after suffering a big loss to open the season to Kimball, 71-to-25, the boys were able to rebound and grab their first win against Morrill, 52-to-49. However, the Warrior then fell again against an athletic and sharp Peetz Bulldogs team, 61-to-56, before losing a heartbreaker against South Platte, 55-to-54.
The Warriors are very close to turning the corner as they just need to get settled and play better as a team. Sophomore Calvin Borgmann is averaging double-digit points per game, and junior Alec Watchorn is athletic and fast, giving the offense options to score while playing solid defense. Junior Kaleb Miller has had a strong start to the year and is a dependable scorer. The Leyton team has talent, and it's just a question of putting together all the elements and working as a team. The Warriors have three winnable games coming up, against Potter-Dix, Bayard, and Hemingford, and three wins against these teams will put the Warriors on the winning side of the ledger and should give them the momentum for a run towards double-digit wins. Coach Rushman has a young and athletic team that could improve throughout the season and challenge for a Subdistrict title.
