SIDNEY--Keep Sidney Beautiful announced that the organization received just over $59,000 in grants to assist with its mission of education, public cleanup, recycling initiatives, and innovative approaches for educational growth for staff and leadership in Sidney.
The grants were awarded by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy. The first grant is a Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program for Clean-ups for $498, and the second grant is for a Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program for Public Education totaling $58,612.
According to Keep Sidney Beautiful President Sandra Buckner, the organization relies solely on grants and donations for funding, and these grants will allow KSB to continue providing services to the community, and the funding will keep the organization in operation for another year. In the upcoming year, keep Sidney Beautiful plans on focusing on public education; Clean Up, Recycling Initiatives, Reusable/Repurposing, Conservation of natural resources, and the reduction of waste ending up in the City of Sidney’s landfill. This endeavor strives to increase property value, storefront curb appeal, beautification of our community, and at the same time protect our city and planet for future generations.
In cooperation with the City of Sidney’s Solid Waste Superintendent Dean Sterling and his team of employees, the grants will help promote awareness of recycling’s benefits, encourage recycling initiatives, and reduce landfill waste in Sidney.
Buckner was required to write a proposal for the grant, including supporting documentation about the efficacy of the programs initiated, and then was awarded the two grants. Keep Sidney Beautiful was established in 2020 and has quickly become an integral part of the Sidney community. Sponsoring events like the Great Trash Race to clean up area roadways every year, as well as sponsoring the Yard of the Month awards here in Sidney, almost all residents of Sidney have witnessed the impact this organization has made over a few short years. With the grants from NDEE, Keep Sidney Beautiful can continue and improve its efforts in keeping our community clean and healthy while promoting environmental and waste reduction efforts.
