DALTON--It was a big day on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Leyton High School as senior Kaydence Haupt signed her Letter of Intent to attend McPherson College in Kansas and play Volleyball for the Bulldogs.
The multi-purpose room at Leyton High School was packed as family, friends, and Haupt's classmates watched the signing ceremony, congratulated Kaydence, and enjoyed some snacks. The senior was thrilled with the turnout and reflected on her journey to signing with McPherson, a small liberal arts college in Kansas with a competitive Volleyball team.
"I have family about an hour away from the school. We had traveled into the area while looking at some other colleges, and I really loved the campus," Kaydence said.
She said that the school reached out to her prior to the state tournament and that when she visited, she was very impressed with the campus, the coaching staff on the Volleyball team, and the Education Program.
"I want to major in Elementary Education, and I was really impressed with the program. It has a lot of hands-on training that I really like, and I just fell in love with the school," she said.
The Bulldogs are a very competitive team and qualified for the national tournament this year. Haupt excelled as a libero for the Lady Warriors and was an integral part of this season's historic team, which went undefeated and earned a spot in the State Championship match.
Haupt has family in the McPherson College area, so she won't be too far away from familiar faces when she needs support. Her mother, Natasha Haupt, is the Head Coach for the Lady Warriors Volleyball team and was beaming with pride over her daughter's accomplishment.
"She worked so hard for this and the fact that she can go to a school she fell in love with and have Academic and Athletic scholarships is just so great," said Haupt.
McPherson College was founded in 1887, citing the need for a college west of the Mississippi River to educate settlers moving westward. In 2022, the college had an enrollment of 810 students. McPherson has one of the largest endowments of any small liberal arts college in the United States.
