SIDNEY--In the 10/31/2024 edition of the Sidney Sun-Telegraph, we covered Independent U.S. Senate candidate Dan Osborn's stop in Sidney and town hall-style meeting at Beans & Steams on Glover Road. During his talk with the crowd, Osborn made comments concerning U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) and other issues. In the interest of fairness, The Sun-Telegraph reached out to the Senator's office and received a reply from Fischer Campaign Manager Derek Oden to the article published in the Sun-Telegraph.
Concerning Osborn's statement that Senator Fischer "killed" the Border Bill due to pressure from the Big 4 Meatpacking companies, Oden said, "Senator Fischer has opposed weak border bills because they don't secure the border."
Osborn's comments were in the context of Senator Fischer being "controlled by big-money interests", to which Oden replied, "Nebraska is a conservative state and Deb Fischer is a conservative senator. She represents the will of the majority of Nebraska voters-which is why they keep re-electing her."
Osborn said that his being an Independent would make it so either political party would have to come to him to be the "51st vote" to break deadlocks, and he also said he was in favor of getting rid of the filibuster in the U.S. Senate.
Oden responded, "Dan Osborn supports killing the filibuster because doing so would help Democrats pack the court, pass gun control bills, and enact nationwide no-limits abortion."
Finally, on Osborn refusing to say which presidential candidate he supports or would vote for, Oden said, "Dan Osborn won't say who he's voting for President because he's voting for Kamala Harris."
Senator Deb Fischer, from Valentine, NE, has been a member of the U.S. Senate since 2013. In 2004, she was elected to the Nebraska Legislature representing the 43rd District. Her first elected office was as a member of the Valentine Rural High School Board of Education, where she served from 1990 to 2004.
Dan Osborn is a U.S. Navy Veteran, industrial mechanic, and former labor union leader. Osborn served in the Nebraska Army National Guard before working at Kellogg's Omaha plant. As the president of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers International Union Local 50G, he led the strike at Kellogg's Omaha plant in 2021.
