Early Morning Break-In Investigated by Sidney Police

SIDNEY--Sidney Police responded to a report of a home invasion in progress on the 1100 block of 22nd Avenue in Sidney at 5 a.m. on the morning of October 18. Upon arrival, the responding officers were told by the homeowner that they had heard multiple male voices outside attempting to enter the house through a window and then heard them inside the residence.

Officers searched and swept the home after arriving and found no intruders. Upon initial investigation, there were no signs of forced entry, and no items were reported missing. The Nebraska State Patrol assisted in the investigation and searched nearby properties for any signs of the intruders.

Investigators processed the crime scene for fingerprints and other evidence. Nearby camera footage is being collected in an effort to identify the suspects. If any nearby residents heard or saw anything unusual or have cameras that might have recorded passer-bys during the early morning hours, they are urged to contact the Sidney Police Department at 308-254-5515.

Acting Sidney Police Chief Sam Lovato said, “It’s important to make sure your front and back doors are locked, as well as windows during this time of year. The change in weather has many people leaving their windows open at night to get a cool breeze through their homes, but often forget to secure the windows before going to bed. Many of these crimes are crimes of opportunity, so it’s important to keep windows and doors locked, have ample lighting around the house and property, and security cameras are also a good idea to make your residence a less desirable target for thieves and prowlers.”

The Sun-Telegraph will update this story as more information becomes available.
