Shooting Incident, Semi-Truck Fire Utilizes Area First Responders

Two incidents late last week and over the weekend kept Cheyenne County First Responders and Police busy and sparked the community's interest. On Thursday evening, a report of a semi-truck fire at mile marker 51 on eastbound Interstate 80 caused a temporary closure of the highway and snarled traffic for hours. On Saturday morning, a shooting incident prompted Police and EMS workers to respond to the scene, and an arrest was made. At the same time, the victim was transported to Sidney Regional Medical Center.

Thursday's incident on Interstate 80 started when a semi-truck driver noticed flames coming out from the trailer area of his vehicle. He parked the truck on the shoulder near mile marker 51 eastbound and proceeded to unhook the truck cab from the trailer. He moved the truck cab a safe distance away from the trailer that was becoming engulfed in flames while emergency workers rushed to the scene. The trailer's load consisted of potatoes, apples, and pears, and all of the produce was destroyed by the fire. Emergency workers diverted traffic as they worked to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported, and no estimate was given of the dollar amount lost in the fire.

The second incident occurred on Saturday morning at approximately 7:45 a.m., when Sidney Police were called to the 1900 block of Ash Street in Sidney responding to a report of a gunshot heard by a neighbor.

When Police arrived at the scene, they discovered a man and a woman, both described as being in their mid-30s, who were involved in an altercation. After an initial investigation, it was determined that the woman fired a gun at the man, who was seriously wounded and transported to Sidney Regional Medical Center. The weapon was retrieved at the scene. The woman was arrested and booked at the Cheyenne County Jail, charged with First Degree Domestic Assault. Sidney Police have not released the names of the assailant and the victim at press time as an investigation is still ongoing. The man's injuries were not life-threatening, but "fairly serious", according to Interim Sidney Police Chief Sam Lovato.

The Sun-Telegraph will publish more information on this incident as it becomes available.
