Lady Coyotes Battling for Wins

POTTER--After a middling start to the season where the Lady Coyotes won two matches and lost three, the team is starting to gel, and although they're still looking to get above the .500 mark. Play has improved and the team has battled hard in every match.

The girls competed on September 12 in a triangular tournament against host Kimball and Mitchell, the Lady Coyotes were able to defeat the Lady Longhorns, 2-to-1. After taking the first set 25-to-17, Kimball battled back and forced extra points in the second set and eventually took the win, 28-to-26. But Potter-Dix stopped their momentum in the third set with a 25-to-18 win to take the match victory. Their next match against the Lady Tigers started well, with the girls outlasting the Mitchell squad to take a 25-to-22 first-set victory. But the Lady Tigers found their groove in the second set, putting down the Lady Coyotes 25-to-21, and were able to ride the momentum through the third set, and took the match with a 25-to-21 third set win for the 2-to-1 match victory.

On Saturday, September 14, the girls traveled to Bridgeport for tournament action. They first faced the Bridgeport Lady Bulldogs. The Bridgeport squad is not the same powerhouse team that they have been in recent years, but they are still a high-quality opponent. However, the Lady Coyotes surprised them and battled hard through the first set, forcing extra points until they fell by a score of 26-to-24. The second set did not go as well as the first as the Lady Bulldogs were able to put together runs and breeze past the Potter-Dix girls 25-to-13 for the 2-to-0 match victory. Next up, the Lady Coyotes faced another tough opponent in the St. Patrick's Lady Irish. After having a great opening set and putting down the St. Patrick's squad 25-to-20, the Potter-Dix girls could not stop the Lady Irish as they took the next two sets 25-to-13 and 25-to-11 for the 2-to-1 match victory. Potter-Dix had a last chance to grab a win in the tournament and faced off against the Cody-Kilgore Cowgirls. The Cowgirls came out strong and battled their way to a 25-to-20 first-set victory. But Potter-Dix regrouped and had a dominating 25-to-9 second-set win. The match came down to a third set, and the Lady Coyotes played very well, pulling away from Cody-Kilgore for a 25-to-16 win.

On Friday, September 20, the girls traveled to Harrison for a match-up against the Sioux County Lady Warriors. The Potter-Dix girls started the match strong, taking the first set 25-to-18 and the second set 25-to-11. But the Lady Warriors found their stride in the third set, fighting hard to prevent the sweep and forcing extra points. Sioux County was able to take the third set with a 27-to-25 win. But Potter-Dix showed their resiliency, and with the Lady Warriors having all the momentum on their side, the Lady Coyotes refused to submit and battled the whole way through the fourth set and took the match victory with a fourth set win, 25-to-20.

As September winds down, Head Coach Keri Mendoza must be pleased with her team as they are winning the matches they should win, and they are battling hard against superior teams and even stealing a set or two along the way. This is the formula for developing a winning team, and the Lady Coyotes are well along their way to becoming an upper-echelon team in D2.
