Chappell Chamber of Commerce Meets September 4; Upcoming Events Discussed

CHAPPELL--The Chappell Chamber of Commerce met on Wednesday, September 4 and several agenda items were discussed and resolved during the meeting. After the old business was discussed, the attendees went on to the current agenda. A delicious lunch of lasagna and a salad was provided by Ann Wick.

The "Movies in the Park" events turned out to be well-attended, however, the attendance seemed dependent upon the popularity of the movie presented. Free popcorn was supplied for the events by the Chamber of Commerce. The Deuel County Fair was discussed, and although inclement weather cut down on attendance this year, and patio heaters had to be used for the first time in recent memory due to the cold snap, the members were happy with the new direction the Fair had taken, with more emphasis on 4-H events and activities for children. The Creek Valley teachers held their Kick-Off event with snacks and prizes donated to the returning teaching staff, and the attendees were reminded that Homecoming would be October 11, with the Homecoming Football and Volleyball games scheduled for Thursday, October 10. The Parade and Dance were still yet to be scheduled.

This year's Halloween event was being planned, with firefighters coordinating the candy giveaway and Trunk-Or-Treat being set up in the downtown plaza. There will be a Community Theater presentation at the Community Center on October 5 and 6, with the performance on the 6th a matinee event. On October 20 from 12-3 p.m., an Apple Cider pressing event will be held with live entertainment, food, and games for the children at the Community Center. Funding for the proposed Splash Pad at the park has been secured, a Frisbee Golf Course will be installed by the lake, and the island in the lake was slated for a clean-up in the Fall. There was also a discussion about obtaining grant funding to help pay for $1.5 million in upgrades to the airport. The Creek Valley Business Booster program was discussed, where businesses contributing $50 or more will help the district pay for "Storm" shirts, coozies, and other items. It was noted that these donations bought shirts for the Robotics Team last year.

The meeting ended with a brief presentation by Wayne Wilcox concerning advertising specials for local businesses for the I-80 Travel Guide. The publication will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year, and plans on expanding the number of pages in the guide and its circulation from 15 thousand to 25 thousand. The next Chamber meeting will be held on October 2, and the Rusty Bucket will be providing lunches for attendees.
