SIDNEY, Neb. - At approximately 1:10 pm on August 7, 2024, emergency responders were paged to an accident at mile marker 63 on US Highway 30 between Sidney and Sunol.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, two motorcyclists were eastbound on U.S. 30 highway near Sidney. Don Sewell, age 67, of Caney, KS was piloting a 1995 Electra motorcycle and was in the lead position with Bardin "Bard" Cade, age 74, of Coffeyville, Kansas trailing Sewell riding a 2013 Road King.
According to the patrol, both vehicles were attempting to turn into the Pole Creek Pony Express historic marker area when Cade's motorcycle collided with Sewell's motorcycle from behind.
Both riders were ejected from their motorcycles. Cade was pronounced dead at the scene. Sewell suffered a dislocated shoulder, road burns, and numerous cuts. According to family members, Sewell was released from medical care and as of Thursday, was heading home.
According to the patrol report, no helmets were worn by either driver, and both motorcycles were totaled.
Sidney Volunteer Fire, Morrill County Ambulance Service, Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office, Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Department of Transportation all responded to the accident.
Cade and Sewell had been best friends and riding partners for decades.
