Masons to Lay Cornerstone at Pole Creek Estates

In keeping with traditions going back centuries, the Masons of Nebraska will lay the cornerstone of the recently completed Pole Creek Estates, 1855 Greenwood Road in Sidney in a special ceremony on Friday, August 2 at 3 pm.

The head of Nebraska Masons known as Grand Master, is John Ferguson of Kimball. He and officers from all across the state will be taking part in the ceremony. George Washington was a Mason and was responsible for laying the cornerstone in the nation's capital dressed in full regalia while serving as the first President of the United States.

"Masons have laid quite a few cornerstones in the area. It's one of the charitable endeavors we do around Cheyenne County. Masons from all around the state will be in attendance. The Grand Lodge in Hastings will be sending out the formal announcement to all Masonic Lodge members," said Ferguson.

Masons lay cornerstones only on public buildings and buildings dedicated to religion, education, civic service, or philanthropy. About ten cornerstones on average are laid in buildings by the Masons in Nebraska each year. Over the years, the Frank Welch Lodge has laid 17 cornerstones in buildings in the Sidney community.

The Frank Welch Lodge No. 75 of Sidney is co-ordinating the cornerstone laying event with Sidney Regional Medical Center, and the public is invited to attend. Boy Scout Troop 90 will be the Color Guard to present the American Flag at the ceremony.

The Frank Welch Lodge meets monthly on the first Tuesday of each month at 1830 Illinois Street in Sidney. The lodge was chartered in 1946 and has 54 members, and there are nearly 8,000 members in about 84 communities in Nebraska. Masonic lodges across Nebraska support local youth and community projects and humanitarian efforts including the child identification program and scholarships. Each year, the Frank Welch Lodge provides a scholarship to a graduating senior from one of the local high schools. The lodge also helps support the Cheyenne County Community Center sports program.
