Jack Hume

In the quietness of our small town, where community spirit thrives and neighbors look out for one another, a beloved soul has been lost. "Captain" Jack Hume, passed away at the age of 75 at his home on Thursday, July 11. His life was a testament to unwavering dedication and boundless kindness, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Jack was born in Sidney Nebraska on July 17, 1948. When Jack was young, his parents moved from Crook to California where Jack found a love of sport. He often told stories of playing baseball year round. What you didn't hear him talk about was how he earned a spot on the California All Star team. Before entering junior high the family moved back to Crook where Jack excelled in multiple sports, including track where he set many school records while in high school.

Upon graduation, Jack earned a business degree while working for Mountain Bell as a lineman, later working his way to upper management.

With little money and even less knowledge, but an undeniable determination, Jack built a house for his young wife and family Sandy, Jeri Lynn, and Scott with his bare hands.

After moving to Peetz in the late 90's Jack again put his skillful carpentry skills to work, adding an addition to the home where he spent the remainder of his days. Noticing his craftsmanship, his wife and partner of 30 years Sandie Kerr put him to work laying tile with his best friend and brother-in-law Mike Bules.

Jack loved Peetz. He loved the peace, loved the quiet, but most of all, he loved the land. Jack couldn't get enough of the Chimney Canyons where he spent countless hours searching for arrowheads and taking friends on four wheeler tours to all the best spots the canyon has to offer.

Jack never lost his edge for competition. His childhood love of baseball returned in the form of slow pitch softball. On most summer weeknights Jack could be found at Pioneer Park playing softball with his friends. On the weekends Jack enjoyed golfing with his buddies or family, often challenging his opponents on the course. His competitive nature extended beyond the field and course however. No matter if it were a game for a dollar at the lake or a high stakes tournament at the Hot Spot (his favorite watering hole) Jack approached every game with a twinkle in his eye and a cunning strategy up his sleeve.

His commitment to service was exemplified in his passion for maintaining his pristine yard. For decades, he dutifully operated his trusty mower, ensuring that every blade of grass was trimmed to perfection. Rain or shine, Jack could be seen meticulously caring for his yard along with the yards of others who needed a helping hand. Not just a fair weather guy, Jack was known to tackle even the heaviest of snowfalls, clearing pathways and driveways with a steadfast determination. Many a morning, residents awoke to find their driveways cleared, all thanks to Jack's tireless efforts.

Beyond his remarkable work ethic, Jack will be remembered for his warm smile and gentle demeanor. He had a knack for brightening the day of anyone fortunate enough to cross his path. Whether sharing stories at the local bar or challenging someone to a game of cards, he embodied the essence of community spirit.

Jack Hume's life was a testament to humility, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to making his town a better place. His legacy will forever be etched into the fabric of his family and community, reminding us of the profound difference one person can make through acts of kindness and dedication.

Jack is survived by wife Sandie Kerr, daughter Jeri Lynn McLavey (Greg), sons Scott (Andi) Hume, Shawn (Debbie) Kerr, Dustin (Dorothy) Kerr, Tyson (Denise) Kerr, and Trent (Erin) Kerr, 14 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, step-father Bob French, uncle Roy Crow, aunt Ila Hixon, and many friends and extended family members.
