Looking Back For A Future

Sometimes we need to stop and look back in our nation's history and see some of the grander and better seeds that were planted by our elected leaders. Here are some seeds from both sides of the political aisle that were planted years ago. We need to water them and help them to grow in these troubled days.

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT QUOTES:

The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.

Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.

To reach a port, we must sail - not lie at anchor - sail, not drift.

Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds.

If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.

Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.

The truth is found when men are free to pursue it.

The only bulwark of continuing liberty is a government strong enough to protect the interests of the people, and a people strong enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over the government.

I do not look upon these United States as a finished product. We are still in the making.

Put two or three men in positions of conflicting authority. This will force them to work at loggerheads, allowing you to be the ultimate arbiter.

We must lay hold of the fact that economic laws are not made by nature. They are made by human beings.

RONALD REAGAN QUOTES:

The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

Inflation is as violent as a mugger, as frightening as an armed robber and as deadly as a hit man.

It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first.

Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives.

The problem is not that people are taxed too little, the problem is that government spends too much.

Government does not solve problems; it subsidizes them.

We should measure welfare's success by how many people leave welfare, not by how many are added.

Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.

Government is like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.

Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.

Oh! If we could only go back to teaching American values to our youth, what a nation we could have!
