CHAPPELL- This past weekend had a lot of fishing going on around the area, from the Father's Day Fishing event at Legion Park in Sidney, the Youth Outdoors Junior Fishing Tournament at Lake McConaughy and in Chappell, the Lion Club Sponsored the Ron Jacobs Memorial Fishing Derby Saturday morning.
The event in Chappell was for kids aged 2-to-12, and beautiful weather greeted the young anglers. Organizer Samantha Isenbart and a group of volunteers made sure everyone had snacks, waters and the equipment necessary for a good day fishing. This year was the 28th year the event was held. The Kids Fishing Derby was started and run by Ron Jacobs nearly three decades ago, and the event was re-named in his honor after his passing late last year.
A grant by the Buckley Trust and the Junkyard Dogs Motorcycle Club have a "Biker For A Day" run, and donate proceeds for the fishing tournament. Concession stands run in the summer by the Lions Club also give proceeds to the event. Every kid that participates gets a prize and a trophy for their efforts.
"Bluegill, catfish, crappie and perch are just some of the fish here in the lake, and some of the kids have already caught a few and are very excited to keep going," said Isenbart.
"All of the kids get a trophy and prize because that's the way Ron started the event, and we want to keep it that way to honor his memory," she added.
