South Team Thwarts Late Comeback Bid to Win Shrine Bowl, 17-10

KEARNEY--The 66th Annual Shrine Bowl at Cope Stadium in Kearney was played on Saturday, June 1, and after a tight matchup between the North and South teams resulted in no points through the first quarter, a touchdown in the second quarter by the South team put them up 7-to-3 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the North team scored a touchdown while the South team converted on a field goal to knot the score at 10-to-10 going into the fourth quarter. It took a wild trick play by the South team to break the tie. The play was a double reverse and a flea-flicker that ended with a 60-yard touchdown pass to give the South team a 17-to-10 lead. The South team was able to hold off a late rally by the North team when with less than two minutes to play, Hastings St. Cecilia's Dawson Kissinger intercepted a pass from North's Nolan Maahs to give the South team the opportunity to run out the clock on offense.

Papillion-La Vista's Preston Prestito scored the lone touchdown for the North team. The South team dominated on offense, controlling the ball by gaining 339 yards and winning the time of possession battle 29 minutes to 19 minutes. Lincoln Southeast's Owen Baxter completed 7-of-10 passes for 133 yards a a touchdown in the victory. Gretna's Isaiah Weber scored two touchdowns and was named MVP of the game. Sidney's Isak Doty played for the North team and completed two of three passes for 58 yards. One of the completions was for 52 yards.
