BRIDGEPORT--It was the offense that turned the tide for the Post 17 Juniors on Wednesday, May 22, as they traveled to Bridgeport to take on the Bombers in an early-season matchup. After scratching out two runs in the top of the first inning, Sidney starter Jaxon Biesecker was rudely welcomed by Bridgeport's Nick Weibert who started the Bomber offense off by blasting a home run to get Bridgeport on the board. The Sidney team was able to bring home three more runs in the second inning to take a 5-to-1 lead, but Biesecker could not hold off the Bombers in the bottom of the frame, and they plated four runs to tie the game at 5-to-5. Sidney added to their score in the third inning by bringing home two more runs, and then another in the fourth inning, but it was a five-run fifth inning, started by a two-run home run by Kyle Jaggers, that sealed the game for the Sidney Juniors. The game ended in a 13-to-8 final for the juniors. Jaggers went 3-for-4, with a home run and 3 RBI in the win, while Connor Schumacher pitched four innings, relieving Biesecker and giving up four runs on four hits. He struck out eight and walked six batters.
In the second game, the Post 17 Seniors had to come from behind to put away the Bombers, and it looked like the Sidney boys were due for a loss until the fourth inning. Down 4-to-1 in the top of the fourth, two singles followed by a double got the runs to start coming in, and a double, single and triple all combined to give Sidney a six-run inning and a lead. Sidney added two more in the fifth and another six runs in the sixth while shutting down Bridgeport to cruise to a 15-to-5 win. Anderson Smelley had a big night at the plate, going 2-for-2 and driving in four runs for the Seniors.
