Sidney Golfers Place Ninth at District Tournament

HASTINGS-- Sidney's Red Raider Boys Golf team had a long trip out to Hastings for the B-4 District Tournament at Southern Hills Golf Course on May 13, and although the boys did not have the best results, or have any individual qualifiers for this year's State Tournament, the season did show continuous improvement for the Sidney golfers.

McCook took top honors in the team results, finishing with a combined score of 314, followed in second place by Adams Central with a score of 320. Scottsbluff took third place with a score of 324, and Sidney finished in ninth place with a combined score of 366.

Individually, McCook junior Reid Loop led the way with a score of 74 at the end of the day, followed in second place by Cozad senior Hayden Russman with a score of 75. Third place went to Adams Central junior Axel Andersen with a score of 75. Although the Sidney team finished out of contention for a State Tournament berth, they did beat out Ogallala, host school Hastings and Lexington in the final standings.

Cole Hanley and Johnathan Meza led the way for the Sidney team, each ending their rounds with a score of 90. Hanley shot a 43 on the front nine, and finished with a 47 on the back nine. Meza shot a 46 on the front nine, and finished with a 44 on the back nine. Logan Johnson followed with a score of 91, shooting a 46 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine. Anderson Smelley finished with a 95, with a score of 43 on the front nine, and then struggling on the back nine with a 53. Tyler Jensen rounded out the Sidney scoring with a 99; 52 on the front nine and 47 on the back nine.

The Sidney squad was unable to qualify any golfers, but the team performed well, and consistently improved throughout the season, which in the challenging game of golf, is a success within itself.
