Leyton 6th and 7th Graders were tasked to paint Impressionist Pastel Landscapes. Impressionism was developed in France during the nineteenth century and is based on the practice of painting spontaneously "on the spot" rather than in a studio setting; a typical impressionist subject might consist of a landscape or a scene from everyday life. Students followed the stylings of such recognizable impressionist artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Mary Cassatt, and their influences can be seen in some of their interpretations of landscapes.
