Serving proudly since 1873 as the beautiful Nebraska Panhandle's first newspaper
EDITOR'S NOTE: Please enjoy this week's Sutherland piece which is a reprint from 10/13/2021. It is just as relevant now as it was then.
Sorry folks, I wish I could write numerous articles full of laughter and fun, but I can't.
After watching the evening news and comparing the way various news channels handle reporting the same event I usually end up shaking my head in sorrow.
One gives a positive spin on everything that is wrong while another spins the good as something bad. The national news networks seem to have become aligned with one or the other major political movements. And another tries to hold the other major networks to account for their errors. After a few evenings of watching the news, I can only shake my head in sorrow and shame.
It is not what is being reported that I find disappointing. It is the way it is reported. A majority of the national networks are so obviously left leaning it is all but impossible to separate the truth from the seriously slanted verbiage. One particular area that is being garbled in the majority of news channels has to do with government and its control over certain aspects of our Constitutionally delineated freedoms. Being from an older generation, I was taught to keep opinion to the editorial pages and keep the news as factual as possible. (I spent 40 years working in newspapers across Middle America.)
The first amendment to the Constitution of the United States reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." These words are straightforward and should not be in need of interpretation, but it seems that is no longer the case these days. What is worse is the deliberate disregard by the federal government and all liberal left controlled state governments of these Constitutionally guaranteed liberties.
Since Congress is the part of our national government that is given the power to legislate (make laws) the actions of President Biden and his record breaking number of executive orders in the first eight months of his presidency is extremely troubling. It is even more troubling that neither house of Congress has so much as blinked an eye over this.
No president in history has issued so many executive orders in such a short period of time. Biden has become more dictatorial than any other president in history. More likely, the Marxists hiding in the wings have seriously manipulated him. Biden does not have the mental acuity to be able to orchestrate such action without being lead by the hand.
Neither Democrats (no surprise), nor more than a miniscule number of Republicans (greatly disappointing) have stood up and challenged the President over these actions.
Granted, there are times when the President should issue executive orders, such as times of crisis when time is critical. Few, if any of Biden's executive orders fit that need. It makes one wonder if he is being manipulated behind the curtains like a marionette.
Most of our large corporations also appear to be part of an apparatchik that is deliberately trying to move our nation to the socialistic left. This would obviously make it easier for them to control more of our economy by establishing rates of pay, working hours, etc.
To come to the sharp point of the blade, Americans are faced with making a choice that will determine the future of America. Will we make our representatives at all levels of government adhere to the directives laid out in our American Constitution, or not. If not, which form of government would you like to live under: fascist, communist, socialist, total dictatorship, or a mish-mash of them all.
It is past time for you and I to wake up and make our voices heard. For too long we have kept silent, or merely mumbled in the shadows, while America is being torn down around us. We must make our elected representatives, from city councils to state houses, to the U.S. houses of Congress bend to our will, not the other way around. They serve us. We do NOT serve them!
