MERNA--Leyton's Warrior Football team has struggled in the early going of the 2023 season, but hoped last week's victory over Morrill would give them some momentum going into their matchup with Anselmo-Merna. Unfortunately, the Coyotes would have no trouble getting past the Warriors, improving their record to 2-and-2 while the Warriors fall to 1-and-3.
After playing a tight first half against the Coyotes, the home team was able tack on a touchdown late in the first half to take a 24-to-12 lead into the intermission. Head coach Glen Lipska tried to make some adjustments on the Warriors' schemes, but they did not work as the Coyotes came out of the break firing on all cylinders, putting up 24 points in the third quarter and putting the game out of reach for Leyton. The Anselmo-Merna defense shut down Leyton's running attack, and the passing attack did not change the Warriors' fortunes at all. The Coyotes tacked on 20 more points in the fourth quarter while shutting out Leyton in the second half, and the home team cruised to a 68-to-12 victory.
The Coyotes rushed for 228 yards and five touchdowns, and scored two more touchdowns through the air. Leyton had trouble stopping seniors Quinten Myers and Tyce Porter, who both rushed for over 90 yards. Freshman Barrett McIntyre was able to block a punt for the Coyotes. The Coyotes tallied nine touchdowns in the game. Leyton travels again Friday to match up with the undefeated Mullen Broncos, with the game starting at 6 p.m.
