Long-Time Coach Harlin Dormann Honored
DALTON-- It was a big night in more ways than one Friday night, as the Leyton Warrior Football team got their first win of the season, and at halftime legendary Leyton Football Head Coach Harlin Dormann was honored.
The halftime event honoring Dormann noted his 27 year tenure coaching the Warrior Football team, finishing with a record of 178-and-66 at Leyton. Dormann led the Warriors to 11 state playoff appearances and two state semi-final appearances in 1989 and 1992. Dormann won All-Regional Eight-Man Coach of the Year, coached in two All-Star games and was inducted into the Nebraska High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in June. The field at Leyton High School was renamed in his honor, and his family members, friends and former students all made it out to the ceremony to honor a man that had so much impact on the Leyton community.
The Warriors were inspired in this game, shaking off the losses in their first two games to put together a solid outing against the visiting Morrill Lions. The Warriors came out firing on all cylinders, putting up 28 points in the first quarter. They allowed a touchdown and two-point conversion in the second quarter, but also put up 24 more points in the frame to take a 52-to-8 lead at halftime. When play resumed, the Warriors' offense focused on running out the clock while their defense shut down the Lions' attack. Leyton put up 8 more points in the fourth quarter to come away with a 60-to-8 win, and stop their losing streak at two.
Sophomore Alec Watchorn had a tremendous game, rushing for 65 yards and added 80 yards receiving, scoring 5 touchdowns in the win. He also had an interception in the game. Senior Kaleb Borges also had a good game, scoring 2 touchdowns and rushing for 74 yards on 7 carries.
The win moves Leyton's record to 1-and-2 on the year, and they travel to Merna to face the Anselmo-Merna Coyotes on Friday.
