Firefighters Boast Win Over Police in Annual Guns & Hoses Game

Saturday afternoon featured absolutely perfect weather for the annual Guns & Hoses Charity Softball game over at the softball fields next to Legion Park. A big crowd came out to root on their favorite team, and the players and families had a great time with the event.

After some allegations of "ringers" being made by team captains Dustin DeNovellis of the "Hoses" and Scott Tobler of the "Guns", the teams took the field to start the game. The "Guns" batted first and quickly built up a four-run lead. The confidence shown by the Sidney and Cheyenne County's Finest started to wear away as the game progressed.

The annual contest isn't just your regular softball game, with the play being "enhanced" with changes like the order of the bases being reversed (3rd base becomes 1st base, etc), and the "Hoses" seemed to handle the changes better, or perhaps it was regular softball they were having problems with, because as the contest progressed, the "Hoses" offense started clicking. The Jakes pulled away from the Coppers on their way to a 21-to-8 rout. The win by the firefighters moved the series tally to 4-to-2, in favor of the "Guns".

After the game, the "Guns" then took on the team from 98.7 The Big Boy for a second game.

The event raised $2,572 for the Night of Hope Walk for Cancer, and the organizers thanked the businesses who donated raffle items, the Fox Theater staff for all of their help, Tim Backer and Kaitlynn Mikkelson for umpiring. The "Guns" promised to be ready to re-assert their dominance next year.
