The Sidney American Legion Post 17 junior team traveled to Gordon Wednesday to face off against he Security First Regulator juniors, and Sidney starting pitcher Connor Hurt twirled a gem, shutting the Gordon team out, striking out five while scattering two hits and three walks over four full innings.
Johnny Ziller took the mound for the regulators to start the game, and he gave up a harmless single on his way to retiring the side. Connor Hurt had a rough start to his outing, hitting the first batter then walking the second batter to dig himself into a hole early on. But he was able to get the next batter to pop out, then fanned the next two to put down the side. After Ziller caught Rhyder Bayne looking for a strikeout to start the top of the second, Hurt hit a long fly ball to left field and legged it out for a triple. After walking the next batter, Ziller got Conner Schumacher to pop out, then Hurt was caught trying to steal home to retire the side with no runs scored.
Hurt gave up a single to start the bottom of the second inning, but then struck out the next three batters to turn away the Gordon team. Sidney finally broke through in the top of the third inning when with one out and two aboard, Reid Fiscus lined a single to score two runs. Patrick McCartney then singled home Fiscus to give Sidney a 3-to-0 lead. Conner Hurt then worked out of trouble again to strand two runners and keep Gordon off the scoreboard. Sidney then loaded the bases in top of the fourth then scored two via back-to-back walks to take a 5-to-0 lead. Gordon was unable to get any runs across home plate, and fell by a final of 5-to-0.
Sidney did not commit an error in the game. Sam Hulbert and Connor Hurt each had two hits in the game, while Fiscus, McCartney and Hulbert each had an RBI in the win.
