Serving proudly since 1873 as the beautiful Nebraska Panhandle's first newspaper
autoharp, popularized in the United States by the Carter family in the early 20th century, became a staple of country music. He then led the group in singing "You Are My Sunshine".
On Thursday, June 22, the Sidney Public Library hosted "Music From Around the World" with David Marsh of Humanities Nebraska. A good crowd attended the event that had David Marsh, a master musician and world-traveler, demonstrate and detail all types of musical instruments from around the world. He noted how many instruments from different parts of the world were similar, using the same types of materials in their manufacture, and how some were totally unique to the cultures that developed them.
Marsh played folk songs and other music from different cultures on a wide variety of instruments, from maracas and spoons, to a dulcimer, an autoharp and a banjo. The group sang along with Marsh when he played familiar songs like "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "You Are My Sunshine", while he explained the origins and development of many ancient instruments into their development as modern day familiar instruments that many play today. The group of about 30 children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the music and left with a new appreciation and understanding of musical instruments from around the world. The free event was sponsored by the Nebraska Humanities Council.
