Blasts 2 Under 70 To Take Sidney Invite
Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph
Sidney's John Beier had to wait a few extra weeks to get to play against his top rivals at his home course, Hillside GC. The wait was worth it for the defending B-4 District Champ and State Qualifier, as Beier used all of his knowledge of the course and skill to shoot a two-under-par 70, and take the Sidney Invitational Individual crown by four strokes, out of field of 50.
After a weather scare on Friday when a mid-April snow pelted the region, the course turned out to be in fine shape, at least for Beier, as he navigated the challenging course with great shot after great shot.
Beier outpaced runner-up Alex Svajgr of Cozad who finished with a 74. Tommy Dredla of Scottsbluff finished third with a round of 75. Other Sidney finishers included John Meza at 15th with a round of 85, Jaeden Dillehay at 28th with a round of 90, Cole Hanley at 36th with a round of 95 and Logan Johnson at 38th with a round of 97.
Sidney Junior Varsity was also on the course, with Boone Hicks finishing top of the squad with a fifth place finish and a round of 90.
For the varsity team competition, Scottsbluff took top honors with a +40 score , while runner-up McCook finished with a +42. Cozad and Ogallala tied for third at +48, and Sidney took fifth with a +52.
Scottsbluff's JV team took top honors in the JV Team competition with a +64. Sidney JV placed fourth with a +148.
The Red Raider varsity linksters next travel to Gothenburg for a 9 a.m. CST tee-time on April 20.
The Sidney team has struggled early on, dealing with the extended winter weather, and are finally able to get in a groove and compete regularly. After their competition in Gothenberg, the Red Raiders have a very busy schedule and are scheduled to compete in Alliance on April 20, Scottsbluff April 24, Chadron April 27, Ogallala and Creek Valley on May 2, at Gering on May 3, Kimball on May 4, at Ogallala and Leyton on May 11, before hosting the District Tournament at Hillside on May 15.
