Area veterans and supporters will be getting together on Saturday, April 8 to raise funds for Potter Legion Hall renovation project with a "Stuff the Ruck" march from Sidney to Kimball, and then back to Potter. The Potter Historical Foundation is hosting the event, and"Stuff the Ruck" is a march that has veterans get their ruck sacks and have them stuffed with donations by march attendees and spectators.
The march begins at 9 a.m. At the Verizon building in Sidney, then starts again at 12:30 p.m. in Kimball and then at 2 p.m. in Potter. The total marching distance is 10 miles, rain or shine. Event organizer Brad Brothers said, "I kind of hope it rains, it will remind me of the marches we did when I was in the service and it keeps you cool."
Potter's Legion Hall has been a cornerstone of the town since its building in 1917 during the first World War. It is a community gathering place and serves local veterans, but it is in need of repair and renovation. The community is looking to raise another $400,000 to complete the renovation.
With volunteers coming from multiple states, the Stuff the Ruck effort has been very successful in its previous efforts, and all of the volunteers are either current or former military members. Organizers are looking for support from local businesses to donate and take pictures with the marchers as they go through the towns.
At Potter, there will be a Veteran's display of all types of firearms used in the United State's wars, and raffle winners will be given the chance to fire these pieces of history at the gravel pit. There will be a free-will donation, and Bag's Bar in Potter will offer a Potato Bar for the participants and supporters.
