The word shrove is derived from the word “Shrive” which refers to confession of sins as a preparation for lent. Shrove Tuesday is a Christian festival, also known as “pancake day” and it always falls 47 days before Easter . The history of Shrove Tuesday dates back to 1445 when Augustine of Canterbury, a founder of the Christian church in southern England, to enforce fasting laws. Christians would make pancakes to use up their supply of eggs milk and butter in preparation of Lent.
About 52 million eggs are used on pancake day worldwide.
