Warriors Take MAC Tournament Crown

After defeating Bayard, the Leyton Warriors Boys Basketball team punched their ticket to the finals of the MAC Basketball Tournament, and defeated rival Potter-Dix to take home the tournament championship, and remain undefeated on the season.

Friday's matchup at Bridgeport High School, against the Bayard Tigers, had Leyton open a 15-to-11 lead at the end of the first period, before going up 25-to-20 at the halftime break. Two solid quarters in the second half kept the Tigers at bay, and the Warriors cruised to a 20 point win, 55-to-35. Senior Dillon Juelfs led the Warriors with 22 points in the victory.

This set up the finals matchup with Potter-Dix, who outlasted Garden County Friday night 59-to-50 to earn their spot in the championship game, also played at Bridgeport High School. Leyton started the game strong, with their defense matching up well against the athletic Coyotes, forcing long shots and keeping the inside well-defended. Leyton opened a 16-to-12 lead after the first period, and extended it during the second quarter. Leyton did a great job moving the ball around and patiently finding the open man, while playing solid defense and limiting the Coyotes' scoring opportunities. Potter-Dix had trouble getting the ball inside, were out-rebounded by the Warriors, and fell behind 29-to-20 at the halftime break.

Leyton continued their strong play in the second half, and although Potter-Dix kept within striking distance, they never seemed to be able to go on a run, and Leyton stayed disciplined and kept moving the ball effectively, getting it into the paint for efficient shots up close. Leyton took the 9-point victory, 51-to-42. It was the second time this season the Warriors have beaten the Potter-Dix squad, an athletic team with good shooters that regularly dominate their competition. But the Warriors play very well as a team, and are effective minimizing the athleticism of teams like Potter-Dix.

Senior Justin Ernest led the Warriors with 15 points while senior Dillon Juelfs and Cort Rummel each had 13 points in the win. Senior Luke Kasten led the Coyotes with 16 points in the loss.

Leyton moves to 14-and-0 with the win while Potter-Dix dropped to 9-and-3 with the loss.
