Storm Starts New Year With Win; Lady Storm Still Winless

Creek Valley's Storm Basketball team battled hard at home on Saturday against the Minatare Indians, and came away with their first win of the season, putting down the visitors by a final score of 65-to-58.

The Indians came into the match up with just one win while Creek Valley had yet to win a game, and struggled in most of their matchups. The teams were evenly matched and battled hard through the game, but Creek Valley's big seniors Hunter Martinez and Seth Wilber combined for 51 of the Storm's 65 points. Freshman Zander Polk set the offense well, dishing off 10 assists while crashing the boards for 9 rebounds.

The Storm had a good game fundamentally, although they did have some defensive lapses and committed 21 turnovers. Senior Seth Wilber had 27 points to lead the offense. The Storm was scheduled to host Sioux County on Tuesday.

The Lady Storm had two games in the first week of 2023, but could not get their first win of the season. On Friday, the Lady Storm traveled to Hemingford for a match up against the Lady Bobcats, and quickly found themselves in a big hole against the suffocating defense of Hemingford. The Lady Storm could only manage 5 points in the entire first half while the Lady Bobcats scored 32 points. With mostly substitutes playing for the hosts in the second half, the scoring place slowed down dramatically, and Hemingford cruised to a 48-to-19 win. Junior Ella Whiting led the scoring for Creek Valley with 8 points in the loss.

Creek Valley traveled to Morrill on Monday and were rudely treated by the host Lady Lions. The Morrill squad scored early and often, while their defense harassed and shut down the Lady Storm attack. The game ended in a 63-to-10 lopsided victory for Morrill. The Lady Storm will try again for their first win on Thursday as they host Paxton.
