20-Plus Years of 'Night of Hope'

On Friday, Aug. 12, the Sidney community officially celebrated 20 years of the Night of Hope supporting cancer patients.

Friday's celebration had a family sound, but each year has its own tears, its own celebration and memories. It is a night to stand with those still battling cancer, to remember those who lost their battle and share the night with those who have defeated cancer.

The Night of Hope started in 2000 with the meeting of a few organizers in the office of Bob Goodwin.

“We did that shortly after the Relay for Life in 2000,” said Kim Phillips.

The Night of Hope was designed as a community fundraiser and support of community residents fighting cancer.

Phillips said the issue was personal for her from the beginning. She is a survivor.

This year's celebration included a free (donations encouraged) pulled pork dinner, the annual “Chair-ity” auction, survivors walk, and luminaria, a slide show and recognition of supporters. Proceeds from the night support local cancer patients. There was also a drawing for a handmade quilt and a silent auction with numerous donated items and services.
