Luke 9:29
“As He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.”
When Jesus prayed, the divine life inside him suddenly burst forth. Those looking on were blinded by the resplendent brightness that burst from within Him. When they had regained their vision, they realized that they were likely viewing what the body will be like when it is glorified.
The splendor of this dazzling revelation was never erased from the memory of these eye-witnesses: Peter, John and James (verse 28). Peter had finished only a few verses of his first Epistle when the vivid imagery of this experience flashed into his mind.
Under the flame of inspiration he proclaimed his hope of “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade away (I Peter 1:4).”
John also referred to the spiritual insights received from this unforgettable moment. He exclaimed: It does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see Him as He is (I John 3:2).”
It is an unforgettable moment when we behold His glorious transfigured face. Then the realities of the spiritual world become more fascinating and gripping, and the things of the present world become less attractive and interesting. Such a precious intimacy transfigures the outlook upon life and the insight into life. As the hymn writer put it, “turn you eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”
