Lady Storm Get First Win

Creek Valley hosted the Sandhills Valley teams on Friday hoping to get their first wins of the season.

The girls' teams started the action, and the Sandhills Valley team put defensive pressure on the Lady Storm while moving the ball and getting good looks at the basket. Creek Valley battled hard to stay with the visitors, but found themselves behind 24-to-13 at the halftime break.

Creek Valley had a solid third quarter, putting up 10 points in the frame, but the Lady Mavericks put up 15 and then outscored the Lady Storm in the fourth period to take the 52-to-32 victory. Sophomore Ella Whiting led the scoring for Creek Valley with seven points in the loss.

Next, the boys' team looked to put their winless start behind them, but the new year didn't change the fortunes of the home team, and the Mavericks quickly proved to be too strong for the struggling Storm, pulling away and putting the game away in the second half on their way to a big 78-to-30 win over the Storm.

The teams traveled on Saturday to match up against Minatare, and the Lady Storm started strong, opening up a 13-to-7 lead in the first period on their way to a 31-to-26 advantage at the halftime break. Creek Valley continued their good play in the second half, with their defense limiting Minatare's ability to get inside while the offense was steady and made their shots. Creek Valley scored 31 points in the second half to keep the Minatare squad at bay, and came away with a 62-to-48 win to break their winless streak on the year. Sophomore Ella Whiting again led the scoring with 22 points, and freshman Karsyn Burgman had 18 points in the win.

The boy's team hoped to match the girls good play and also get their first win of the year, but the Minatare squad quickly built a lead and kept up the pressure through the game. The boys battled but were unable to get their shots to fall or any momentum going, and fell by a final score of 65-to-35.

The teams travel to Paxton on Thursday to match up against the Tigers.
