Lady Warriors Fight Off Arthur, 48-40

Leyton's Lady Warrior Basketball team traveled to Arthur for their last game of 2021 with the Lady Wolves. After opening a big lead after the first period, the Leyton squad needed to fight off a surge by the Lady Wolves that lasted the entire game.

Leyton started the game strong with tight defense and good shot selection, setting a rhythm and dictating the pace of action. Opening a 20-to-4 lead at the end of the first period, it seemed that Leyton would cruise to an easy victory, but the Lady Wolves hung in and started battling. After getting a string of points together, the Arthur team started gaining confidence and stole the momentum from Leyton, outscoring the Lady Warriors 13-to-6 in the second period, but Leyton still led 26-to-17 at the half.

Leyton played a strong third quarter, consistently scoring and playing good defense. The Lady Wolves were unable to gain any ground in the third period, but a scoring drought and good defense in the fourth quarter narrowed the gap for Arthur County. But it was too little, and too late for the Lady Wolves, as they could not overcome the Lady Warrior's early lead. Leyton took the victory, 48-to-44, showing resilience as a team and the wherewithal to not panic during the Arthur scoring runs.

Freshman phenom Zaili Benish again led the offense for Leyton with 18 points, followed by freshman Shawnee Gamble with 10 points.

Leyton ends the 2021 portion of their schedule at 3-and-4, with a win and a loss in district. The Lady Warriors are next in action when they host Hay Springs on Saturday, January 8.
