Important Names

Names are important in every relationship. Names define us; who we are, where we belong, even our status and prestige in society. It is no different with God. There are about 200 recorded Names of God in the Bible. Fourteen of them show up in Psalm 23, alone, so let us examine His Names.

The “EL” names define His Person, such as Elohim (Creator), El Elyon (Most High God), El Roi (God Who sees me) and El Shaddai (God of all sufficiency).

“YAH” is God’s redemptive Name. Above every other name, it means “I was, I AM, I will ever be.” YAH is the Name God gave Moses in Exodus 6:2 to assure Israel and defeat Pharoah. Jesus said “I AM HE” when soldiers came to arrest and bring Him to trial before His crucifixion. See Psalm 68:4

“Jehovah” denotes His Lordship over, and relationship to, us: Jehovah Jireh (my Provider), Jehovah Nissi (His Banner over me), Jehovah Rapha (my Healer), Jehovah Shalom (my Peace), Jehovah Tsidkenu (my Righteousness) and best of all, Jehovah Sabaoth [Sab-A-oath], (Lord of Hosts, Who goes to war for me).

There are two main Hosts Father God is in charge of: Angels and stars. With God as their Commander, they operate separately and, quite often, together. Consider Judges 5, when Israel was under severe siege by Midian.

God called Gideon and Deborah to develop a strategy, coming to their aid in verse 20: “They fought from Heaven, the stars in their courses fought against Sisera”.

Stars and angels are on display in Luke 2:10-14: “Then the Angels said [to the shepherds] ‘Be not afraid, for behold, I bring you tidings of great joy which will be to all people; for there is born to you, this day, in the City of David (Bethlehem) a Savior (Yeshua), which is Christ (Anointed One of God), the Lord (Messiah) … And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host praising God and saying, ‘glory to God in the Highest (Yahweh) and on earth peace (Shalom), goodwill toward men.” This last phrase, expanded, would declare “Jehovah Nissi for all men”.

Jehovah Sabaoth brings His Hosts into array, once again, in the miracle of His Word, Jesus (Yeshua), Who became flesh and now dwells among us, “Immanuel” His Kingdom is placed within the hearts of men, women and children all over the world. John 1:14
