As part of the 50th Anniversary of NSAA State Volleyball Tournament, Potter-Dix High School invited members of previous championship teams to be honored between sets of the Potter-Dix – Hay Springs match in Potter on October 8.
Members and coaches of the 1972, 1975 and 1976 Potter Coyotes, 1989 Potter-Dix Coyotes and 1999 Potter-Dix Coyotes State Runner-Up teams reunited and were honored by a packed house of spectators.
Coach Bill Hicks of the 1972, 1975 and 1976 teams received a huge ovation and hugs from the team members that were able to attend the celebration. Specialized T-Shirts were provided for every team, and the ladies and coaches all reflected on their championship seasons and the impact playing in the Potter community had on their lives.
The energy and the celebration had a great impact on the current Lady Coyote team, as they started their match against Hay Springs strong and didn't let up, winning in straight sets 25-to-15, 25-to-22 and 25-to-17.
The honorees were also invited on the football field to be part of the “tunnel” the Coyote football players run through during player introductions. That energy helped to propel the football team to a big 51-to-12 over Hay Springs Friday night.
Prior to Friday's celebration, the Lady Coyotes had a triangular with Kimball and Bayard. In the Kimball match, the Lady Longhorns came out strong and built a lead, and outlasted a Potter-Dix surge to take the first set 25-to-18. But the Potter-Dix girls regrouped and got focused, and battled hard through the second set to take the victory 25-to-22.
The final set was also a battle, but the Lady Coyotes were able to hang on for the 25-to-21 win and the 2-to-1 match victory.
The Lady Coyotes did not fare as well against Bayard in the opening match, however. The Lady Tigers came out strong and took the first set 25-to-16. The Lady Coyotes adjusted and fought back in the second set, which was a battle the whole way. The Potter-Dix girls were able to take the set in extra points, 26-to-24.
However, Bayard was able to shake off the set loss and came back in the third set with a 25-to-20 victory for a 2-to-1 match win. The Lady Coyotes sit at 8-and-13 for the year and were scheduled to travel to face the Garden County Lady Eagles on Monday.
