Leyton's Lady Warrior Volleyball team had seven matches over the last week, and won four during the stretch to put their record at 13-and-10 going into the final stretch of the season. The action started Tuesday, September 28, when the Lady Warriors hosted the powerful Bridgeport Lady Bulldogs in Dalton. The Lady Warriors were overpowered by the visitors, but did manage to win a set against one of the area's premier teams, falling by a 3-to-1 set tally. Sophomore Trinity Beutler had 10 kills and senior Cortney Holt had eight kills in the loss.
Leyton then traveled for tournament play on Saturday October 2, and won two out of three matches. The put down the Hyannis Lady Longhorns in straight sets, 25-to-15, 25-to-15 and then defeated Sandhills/Thedford 25-to-12, 18-to-25, 25-to-23 for their second win of the tournament. They finished up against a strong Sandhills Valley team, but made a good showing in their two sets, 18-to-25 and 20-to-25.
On Tuesday, October 5, Leyton hosted a triangular with Banner County and Creek Valley. The Lady Warriors had little trouble with Banner County, winning in straight sets 25-to-10 and 25-to-3, but had a difficult time with an improved Creek Valley squad. Creek Valley started the first set strong, opening a good lead until the Leyton squad came back to narrow the lead. But Creek Valley kept up the pressure and pulled away for a 25-to-15 first set victory. The tables were turned in the second set as the Lady Warriors opened a lead and cruised to a 25-to-13 second set win. In the third and final set, both teams battled, with neither gaining much of a lead through the set. As the set wore down, the action tightened, and extra points were needed to decide the match. It was the Creek Valley squad that pulled out the last two points, earning a 27-to-25 set win and a 2-to-1 match victory.
On Friday, the Leyton squad rebounded with a straight set home victory against the Mullen Lady Broncos 25-to-15, 25-to-22 and 25-to-19. The offense was well-balanced with Holt leading with 9 kills and Beuttler, sophomore Claire Watchorn and sophomore Kaitlyn Craig each having 7 kills in the victory. Leyton delivered 12 Ace Serves in the match, while freshman Sydney Fortune had an outstanding 20 assists in the win. Leyton next travels to Harrisburg on Saturday for tournament action.
