Helen P. Hedges

Helen P. Hedges, age 64, of Sidney, NE passed away in Scottsbluff on Monday, August 3, 2020.

Robert (Bob) H. Hedges, age 66, passed away in Bridgeport on May 15, 2020.

Memorial services for Robert and Helen will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Evangelical Free Church in Sidney, NE with Pastor Doug Birky officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Gurley Cemetery and services will conclude at the church.

Helen Pauline (Alexander) Hedges was born on June 9, 1956 in Sidney, NE. She was born to Dolly James and Beluah Ruth (Gilder) Alexander. Her family lived in Gurley, NE where she attended school from 1960-1965.

In August 1965, the family moved to California because Helen’s dad was transferred to Sierra Army Depot. They lived in Doyle, CA and then Herlong, CA from 1965-1977. She attended K-12 in Doyle and Herlong. After graduation she went on to Lassen Community College in Susanville, CA.

She was very active in church, VBS, the church secretary and a Sunday school teacher. She was busy in the community helping with Student Council, football and basketball concessions, Honor Roll, Girls Auxiliary, Volunteer Future Nurses, Future Business Leaders, summer school, babysitting, fire-prevention and food drives. She helped with Cool Kids Club (she loved the kids) for 18 years. Work activities involved South Valley School, Eaton High School and Monfort Elementary. She helped with Cool Kids Club (she loved the kids) for 18 years. Her hobbies included sewing, reading, crocheting, collecting Christmas decorations and visiting friends.

In 1977, Helen met Robert “Bob” Hedges. Bob’s sister, Garnet Young, introduced them. After a few months, they married on March 3, 1978. The were life partners for 42 years. To this union, they had a son, Phillip Ryan and a daughter, Alicia Marie. Their life together was a series of ups and downs. They shared the role of stay-at-home parent. There were numerous roles to due to illnesses.

Bob’s occupations kept them primarily in California and Colorado. There were many activities to keep them busy-volunteering for football field announcing, plays, musicals and much more.

Helen is survived by her children, Phillip Hedges and Alicia Hedges of Gurley, NE, one brother, Leland Alexander of Ogallala, NE, one sister, Evelyn Combs and family of East Peoria, IL and one aunt Esther Seanor of Gothenburg, NE. Many cousins and friends from schools and churches whom she loved very much. Also, her four furry babies Shadow, Butterfinger, Prissy and Baby.
