Sidney’s Red Raider Cross Country team had a challenging week with great results, starting with the UNK High School Invite in Kearney on Monday Sept. 28 and ending with the Western Conference Meet in Sidney Saturday morning.
The boy’s squad came in third overall at the UNK Invite last Monday, led by a fifth place finish by junior Daniel Bashtovoi at 17:24.39 followed by a 14th place finish by Mitch Deer at 17:43.72. The boy’s team totaled 117 points, behind first place finisher Columbus Scotus at 103 and second place Milford at 112.
The girl’s squad placed fifth overall with a 139 final score, led by a third place finish of freshman Talissa Tanquary at 20:20.65, knocking two runners from 2007 and 2014 off the course record charts, followed by junior Lydia Peters in fourth place at 20:27.06. The Douglas County West team took first place with a final tally of 92, followed by Lincoln Christian with 103 and Pierce with 128.
On Saturday, Sidney hosted the Western Conference Meet, and the boy’s squad finished second overall. Bashtovoi again led the boys with a second place finish at 17:28 followed by Deer with a seventh place finish at 17:46. Juniors Treyson Johnstone, Tre Canas and Julian Maytorena all finished in the top twenty at 12th, 16th and 17th respectively. The Gering team took first place with 24 points followed by Sidney with 37 and Scottsbluff came in third with 55 points.
For the girls, the Sidney team ended with a fourth place finish overall, led by Peters in second place with a time of 20:12 followed by Tanquary in third place at 20:18 and sophomore Rheo Dykstra in 13th place at 22:36. The Gering team took first place overall with 33 points followed by Scottsbluff in second also with 33 points while Chadron earned third place overall with 37 points.
Sidney Cross Country Head Coach Donna Wiedeburg talked about the week’s success, noting the UNK Meet had the Raiders going against many unfamiliar teams. She said, “Our goal was to be a top 5 team for both girls and boys. We don’t generally get to compete against many of these teams and we are not familiar with their courses so we went into the UNK Invite with a goal of being a top 5 team and running our best. We have had a couple of hard weeks of practice leading up to today and it paid off.”
The success at the UNK Meet and the hard training paid off with the successful results at the Western Conference Meet on Saturday. Deer Run Park will be the location of the Sidney Invite on Thursday, and the Red Raiders look to continue their successful season at home.
