After a big loss to Cozad last week, the Red Raiders hoped to get back on the winning track by traveling to Holdrege to take on the 1-and-2 Dusters Friday night, but again could not get their offense in gear and fell 34-to-10.
Holdrege just needed three plays to score their first touchdown, a 39 yard run by senior Sam Holt, while the Red Raiders could not get a first down, going three-and-out on their first four possessions. A one yard touchdown by senior Jacob Janssen was followed by another touchdown run by Holt, and then the Dusters were able to catch Sidney sophomore quarterback Nolan Hofrock in the end zone for a safety and went into t he intermission up 27-to-0.
The second half started with Holt scoring another touchdown, a 5 yard rush to move the score to 34-to-0. Sidney finally put some points on the board near the end of the third quarter when an 11 play, 75 yard drive was capped with a 39 yard field goal by junior Connor Hartzler to finally get the Red Raiders some points. The fourth quarter featured substitutes from both teams, and Sidney freshman Isak Doty took over at quarterback and was able to move the Raiders down the field, completing passes to freshman Luke Holly while senior Brady Robb broke open a big run to get the Sidney squad in scoring position. A few plays later, Robb rushed for 11 yards and a touchdown, and a good extra point moved the score to 34-to-10 late in the fourth quarter. Holdrege then ran out the clock to finish the game.
Sidney’s offense was shut down for the majority of the game, with the Dusters line being able to shed blocks and clog up holes and shut down the Raider running game. Defensively, the Raiders were able to get pressure at times but could not stop the Holdrege running attack. Combined with a number of miscues, the Sidney team found themselves in a deep hole early in the game and could not recover. Most of Sidney’s positive yardage came during the fourth quarter against the Holdrege substitutes.
Sidney next hosts South Sioux City Friday at 7 p.m. at Weymouth Field in Sidney.
