Leyton’s Lady Warriors 1-2 at Garden County

Leyton’s Lady Warrior Volleyball team had an off day on Thursday as their scheduled opponent, Sedgwick County, could not play due to Colorado’s onerous COVID-19 policy, but had a full slate of action on Saturday against three opponents.

The Lady Warriors first squared off against host Garden County, and the Lady Eagles took it to the Leyton squad firing off a 25-16, 25-13 2-to-1 victory. The Lady Warriors next faced the undefeated South Platte Lady Blue Knights, and after falling 25-10 in the first set, the Leyton squad regrouped and took the South Platte team to the limit, forcing extra points before finally falling 26-24 for the 2-to-0 match loss.

Leyton was able to salvage a win for the day when they faced rival Creek Valley in a hard fought contest, winning in two sets 25-22, 25-22. Senior Ella Draper led the offense with eight kills while junior Cortney Holt came up with eight blocks and sophomore Axi Benish had 13 assists in the Leyton win.

Lady Coyotes Scratch Two Wins In Tough Week

Potter-Dix’s Lady Coyote Volleyball team had a busy week, traveling to Kimball for a Triangular on Thursday, then traveling for a Quadrangular at Bridgeport on Saturday. On Thursday, the Lady Coyotes lost their first match to a sharp Mitchell team 2-to-0, but then rebounded and defeated Kimball 2-to-1. Sophomore Jayden Shoemaker led the offense with 9 kills and sophomore Lily Tabor had 15 digs in the victory.

On Saturday the girls traveled to Bridgeport and started off against Mitchell, again falling in in straight sets 2-to-0.

They then faced another powerful team in the Bridgeport Lady Bulldogs and lost in straight sets again, 2-to-0. Potter-Dix was able to salvage their final match of the day against Hyannis with a 2-to-0 victory, 25-to-12 and 25-to-17.

The Lady Coyotes next host the Creek Valley Lady Storm in Potter on Thursday.

Sidney Volleyball Starting To Roll

Since the Lady Raiders opened their season under new coach Julie Smith with a 3-to-0 loss against Scottsbluff, Sidney has rattled off six wins in a row, only dropping two sets in the process. Last Tuesday, the Lady Raiders traveled to Mitchell and despite the pumped up home crowd and loud environment, Sidney put away the tough Lady Tiger team in three straight sets, 25-12, 25-18, and 25-17.

The scores were much closer than they should have been, as the Lady Raiders still struggled with early season positioning and hitting errors, but the bench players were able to get a lot of court time which will help as the season develops.

Sidney out hit Mitchell 29-to-9 in the match, with senior Karly Sylvester leading the offense with 13 kills while senior Logan Holly had nine kills and three aces serving to improve the Lady Raider’s record to 3-and-1.

On Saturday, Sidney traveled to Cozad for a Triangular, and Smith was looking forward to this test to see how the girls were in their conditioning, as well as to see the improvements they have been making closing out sets.

Smith said “We are continuing to work on serving aggressively and competing at the net, while focusing on communicating on the court.”

The practice and focus paid off as the Lady Raiders started against Valentine and cruised through a 25-11, 25-12 two set victory, with Sylvester and Holly notching five kills each. Senior Ireland Smelley had four ace serves in the win.

Next the Lady Raiders faced off against Centura out of Cairo, and the Lady Centurions offered a tough contest but eventually fell in three sets, 25-18, 17-25 and 25-18. Sylvester led with eight kills while Holly and senior Emma Winholz had six kills each in the victory.

Finally Sidney squared off against Cozad, and the Lady Haymakers fared no better than the previous two opponents, with Sidney winning in straight sets 25-14 and 25-15. Senior Jersie Misegadis led the offense with five kills and two ace serves and junior Brynna Ross had seven assists.

Smith is pleased with the progress the team has made since their opening loss to Scottsbluff. She said, “The Scottsbluff start to the season was an eye opener for all and I feel that we have made good progress since then. We have a busy week ahead with Chadron and Bridgeport at home on Tuesday and then we travel to Alliance on Thursday.”
