Charlotte Dorwart was recently selected as a member of the State Advisory Committee on Aging.
She will be serving on the committee through 2024.
The state is divided into Area Agencies on Aging with eight in Western Nebraska. Each board of county commissioners elects a representative for the local board.
She stressed the need for services to the senior populations, especially in rural areas.
"That is one of the problems," she said, "getting services."
The challenge is keeping people in their homes who can and want to.
"There are lots of services available so those people can maintain themselves independently," she said.
Some of the services available locally include the Homemaker Services and Handiman Services. The Handiman services include mowing lawns in the summer and moving snow in the winter.
She said rules and procedures don't always match the needs of an area, and that is the purpose of the advisory committee, to keep the State aware of needs and how to respond to those needs.
