Serving proudly since 1873 as the beautiful Nebraska Panhandle's first newspaper
“Come and sit with me a moment, grandson, I want to tell you of how it used to be,
When America was a republic and the people around here were free.
The year was 2020 when everything started to shift,
In March of that year on the news there was a drift.
There was a new coronavirus that began across the ocean.
It became a worldwide pandemic that caused chaos and commotion.
We all quickly obeyed and stayed within our home.
We didn’t know what to believe and fear began to roam.
She came like a mighty lion on a wild rampage.
The virus seemed to attack those in older age.
Those in authority quickly sprung to their feet,
And gave us executive orders that we all had to meet.
People immediately began hoarding things such as toilet paper and soap.
It was shocking to me where people held their hope.
We found ourselves in the same frenzy wondering what the future would be.
We prayed and sought the Lord and waited to watch and see.
We could all go to the big box stores, but the mom and pops were dying on the vine.
Our first amendments rights were trampled all over as we stood apart in line.
The narrative continued to change, the numbers bounced all around.
After weeks of staying at home the people began to feel bound.
Injustice, greed and hate were growing in their hearts.
Riots, looting, and violence struck like fiery darts.”
“But, Nana, why didn’t you do something? Why didn’t you stand and fight?
I don’t like this America I’m living in. The darkness needed the light.”
“My dear sweet boy, you see, I stood my ground and fought,
But all around were those who gave in or a vaccine is what they sought.
We tried to stand for freedom. We tried to stand for you.
But too many were just not ready to support the red, white and blue.
I’m so sorry this is our nation. You have an inheritance of debt.
We owe you a future that we didn’t just sublet.”
My intense prayer is that this will NOT be the American story for my children or their children. Again, when are we going to rise up as an American people and be the resilient nation that I KNOW we are?
We can do this! We can reopen America, our states, our counties, our neighborhoods PEACEFULLY. It is time to open the doors WIDE so those that are hurting, fearful, and broken have a safe place to find hope.
