Doris Marie (Nurse) Kella - Obituary

Doris Marie (Nurse) Kella, 93, passed away on April 9, 2020 in Sidney, Nebraska.

Doris was the youngest of four children born to Howard and Greta (Green) Nurse.  She was born on October 9, 1926 in Dunlap, IA. She graduated from Dunlap High School in 1944.  Doris completed cosmetology training before joining her older sister to live in California.  While in California, Doris met Melvin E. Kella and they married on March 5, 1948. After living in San Diego for a short time, they moved to Denison, IA to be near her family. Eventually they moved to Omaha, NE where Doris worked for the Reserve Bank.  In 1958, Doris and Melvin adopted their son Tim and their daughter Sue in 1961. The family moved to North Platte, NE in 1964, and then to Sidney, NE in 1972.

Doris was a member of the United Methodist Church for 83 years.  She loved to sing, play the piano and the organ. Doris was an avid bowler, participating in 3-4 leagues a week.  She was a talented seamstress, knitter and she loved to crochet. Doris loved to camp, boat and fish with her family. As a long-time member of the BPO Does, Doris held many different offices over the years. Doris worked for Harold's Electric for many years before she retired.  In her later years, she and Mel learned to square dance and traveled to many different dance conventions across the country. They also spent many years wintering in Arizona.  Doris loved going to coffee, visiting with her friends, showing pictures of her great-grandchildren and reflecting on good times.  Her four-legged companion, Shilee, was always by her side.

Doris is survived by her son Tim, daughter Sue (Darin VanNatter) Hiett, grandsons Brandon (Sarah) Hiett and Brett Hiett, great-grandchildren Jacob and Catherine Hiett, numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Shilee. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Mel, her parents, her sisters and brother in laws Margaret and Walt Plotz, Betty and Robert Harrell, brother Kenneth, and three infant children James, Leah Jane, and Baby.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with Pastor Corey Jenkins officiating.  Interment will be in Dunlap, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Doris' name to the First United Methodist Church, the BPO Does or the Nebraska Children's Home Society.
