Potter-Dix's Lady Coyote Basketball team has struggled all season, and the winless season ended with two losses in Co., and a first round defeat in the first round of the D2-12 Subdistrict Tournament against Creek Valley.
Potter-Dix first traveled to Peetz, Colorado, last Tuesday to match up against the Lady Bulldogs, another team that has also struggled this season.
The game started with both teams struggling to score, but the offense picked up and the home team was able to pull ahead with a 11-to-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter. But Potter-Dix refocused and cleaned up their play and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 12-to-7 to take a 20-to-18 lead into the half. The Lady Coyote defense stymied the Peetz offense in the third quarter, only allowing three points, which enabled the Potter-Dix girls to pull ahead for good and earn their first victory of the season, 37-to-31. Junior Jaydin Paxton scored 17 points for the Lady Coyotes in the win.
The Lady Coyotes could not ride the momentum of their first win into another victory, as the Sedgwick County Lady Cougars made short work of the visiting Potter-Dix squad Thursday night. The Lady Cougars used a pressure defense that caused turnovers and steals that resulted in easy points for the home team.
Potter-Dix was able to get off very few shots, and could not keep up with the Sedgwick scoring, and trailed 36-to-6 at the half. The Lady Cougars continued to dominate in the second half, and the Lady Coyotes fell by a final score of 49-to-15.
On Monday night, Potter-Dix matched up against the Creek Valley Lady Storm in the first round of the D2-12 tournament at Sidney Middle School. The game started with both teams unable to score, with defenses causing turnovers and limiting shots resulting in a 3-to-2 Potter-Dix lead at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams started to get their offenses in gear and started to score as the game progressed, and Creek Valley was able to build a lead a stay ahead, outlasting the Lady Coyotes 35-to-27 to advance to the next round of the tournament where they were scheduled to face number 1 seed Leyton on Tuesday night.
Full details of the tournament will be in next week's Sun-Telegraph.
