Potter-Dix senior Terell Gray scores two points during the Coyote's loss to Sedgwick County Thursday night.
With the D2-12 Subdistricts looming next week, the Potter-Dix Boy's basketball team lost two match ups against Colorado teams prior to their final regular season contest against Minatare on Friday.
After the Coyotes battled for two tough wins in a row against Crawford and Garden County, the depleted Potter-Dix squad hit the road to face Peetz and Sedgwick County.
Last Wednesday, the Coyotes traveled to Peetz and the game started with both teams trading turnovers until Potter-Dix freshman Luke Kasten grabbed a rebound and went coast to coast, laying in the first two points of the game. But Peetz responded, and took a 15-to-9 lead with two minutes left in the first period led by senior Cooper White and the strong inside play of junior Nolan Hill.
Potter-Dix was getting many opportunities to score, but could not get their shots to fall, a pattern that continued into the second quarter and ended the first half with the Coyotes trailing 29-to-17.
Peetz continued their strong rebounding and inside scoring, pulling away to a 23 point lead with three minutes left in the third period. Potter-Dix tried to narrow the gap, but were still behind 51-to-32 at the end of the third period. Peetz then slowed the action down in the fourth period, limiting the Coyotes' scoring chances, and sealed the 62-to-45 victory for the Bulldogs.
Kasten provided most of the Coyote's offense, pouring in 35 points while senior Terell Gray scored eight in the loss.
The Coyotes traveled again to Colorado on Thursday, this time to face off against the powerhouse Sedgwick County Cougars. The short-handed Coyotes battled hard in the beginning of the game, playing good defense while making the most of their shot opportunities. A close first quarter ended with the Cougars holding a 14-to-10 lead.
The Potter-Dix boys hung in through the second quarter with Gray scoring on the inside and playing good defense while Kasten scored from the outside and took his opportunities to drive the lane. But by the end of the half, Sedgwick County finally started to get their offense in sync and pulled out to a 27-to-18 halftime lead. The Cougar momentum continued into the second half, and Potter-Dix was limited to just nine points in the last two quarters and fell by a final score of 50-to-27. The Coyotes visit the Minatare Indians on Friday in their final game prior to the subdistrict tournament next week.
