Raiders Continue to Struggle

After securing their first win of the season and getting healthier, the Red Raider basketball team looked like they were starting to find their rhythm on the court, but losses to Gering and McCook showed the Sidney squad still has a way to go to be competitive in the tough Western Conference.

Gering came down on Senior Night Friday, and immediately pulled out to a 7-to-0 lead, putting up quick scores while shutting down the Sidney offense. Tall and fast, the Gering boys opened up a 23-to-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, going up 35-to-14 at the half and then cruising to a 70-to-37 victory. The Bulldogs had three scorers with double digits, and senior Kaled Gonzalez led the way with 17 points in the Gering victory. Senior Skylar Heineman, junior Connor Hartzler and sophomore Sawyer Dickman had seven points each in the loss.

The next day, the long trip to McCook didn't help the Raider's fortunes as they ran into a strong McCook team that started fast and kept scoring against Sidney. McCook's speedy and athletic players played tough defense and limited the Raider's scoring opportunities, and easily pulled away for the 79-to-43 victory. Heinemann led the Sidney scorers with 10 points while juniors Zach Burke and Dylan Gunkel had nine points each in the loss.

The defeat dropped Sidney to 1-and-11 on the season.
