The Cheyenne County Commissioners approved a request by High West Energy to construct a power line.
The proposed power line will be constructed from Highway 30 north along County Road 91 for about 3,300 feet. Tim Lang of High West Energy was present at the meeting Monday. Lang said the original plan was to route the power line through adjacent private property. Company officials could not reach the land owners. The land is believed to be in a trust. Monday Lang said the plan is for the power line to be underground. The power line would be to power a new crossing signal. Lang said the underground routing of the power line is already approved by the railroad.
With that the commissioners approved the proposal.
The commissioners also discussed paving of the road south past Love's Truck Stop. County Roads are to be built for 50 mph or more, according to discussion. However, the road to be paved is within the City of Sidney and thus can be lowered to 45 mph. The concern is the faster speed rating would require building the road up higher, and the project costing more.
Highway Superintendent Doug Hart also noted his department received NIRMA assistance for solar-lit barricades, safety vests and a television for safety seminars. Hart and the commissioners also talked about the bidding process and seeking a new backhoe in the future.
As the first meeting of the year, the commissioners also appointed the board chairman and vice-chairman. Commissioner Darrell Johnson remains as the board chairman and Philip Sanders as the vice-chairman. The board then appointed members to the county boards Planning and Zoning Commission, County Fairboard and Cheyenne County Visitors Committee.
The commissioners also approved a county assistance application from Sharon Merritt. The application is for burial assistance. The county is limited to $1,500 in assistance.
Early in the meeting, the commissioners held an executive session regarding performance evaluations for Veterans Service Officer Fred Wiedeburg, Tourism Director Kevin Howard, Highway Superintendent Doug Hart and Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Tom Payne.
